Malaysia Strongly Condemns Recognition Of Jerusalem As Israeli Capital - Najib

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak today said Malaysia strongly condemned the move by the United States (US) to recognise Jerusalem as the capital of Israel forever.

Najib, who is also UMNO president, said he was confident that Muslims would never accept the decision by the US to recognise the city, one of the three holiest places after Makkah and Madinah.

"We strongly condemn the move forever," he said in his policy speech at the opening of the UMNO General Assembly 2017 at the Putra World Trade Centre (PWTC) here today.

His speech was responded with the shouts of "Allahu Akhbar!" (Allah is the Greatest) three times by the delegates on the floor and UMNO members outside the hall who were watching the live telecast of the session.

Palestinian guests who attended the opening ceremony were seen standing to show their respect for the statement by Najib.

The UMNO president also said he concurred with his deputy, Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi that Malaysians should be "colour-blind" when it came to humanitarian issues.

"...(It is) a struggle not just from the Malaysian Muslims but also from the entire world which is represented by the UMNO-led government," said Najib.

He also said Malaysia would continue to show concern and play an active role in helping fellow Muslims around the world such as in Myanmar and Palestine.

"UMNO has and will never compromise on any matter involving contempt on the sanctity of Islam and its teachings," said Najib, adding that Malaysia was the first country to provide the Field Hospital at Cox's Bazar in Bangladesh for Rohingya refugees.

It was reported that US President Donald Trump on Wednesday recognised Jerusalem as the capital of Israel and stated that the US would shift its embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem in the near future.
